Gary Woodson "Woody" Howe, 82, of Omaha, formerly Sioux City, died on Sept. 14, 2018, after a lengthy illness and short-term stay at a memory care unit near Omaha.

Services will be 2 p.m. Friday at Trinity Episcopal Cathedral in Omaha, followed by a reception at the Omaha Press Club.

Gary was born on Feb. 15, 1936, in Sioux City, the son of Robert B. and Marjorie Woodson Howe. Woody graduated from Central High School, and received a four-year ROTC scholarship to Yale University, where he graduated in 1958.

After serving in the U.S. Navy, he worked at the Lincoln Star Journal, and then went to the Omaha World-Herald, where he had a distinguished career, retiring as editor of the paper in 1998.

In retirement, Woody dedicated his time to golf and enjoyed his family and friends. He was recently inducted into the NE Press Association Hall of Fame.

He is survived by his wife, Marilyn McLeod Howe; his sister, Mariette Howe Bell; children, Marisa and Evan Howe; five grandchildren; and his first wife, Anda Howe.
