Mildred L. Stevenson, 90, of Sioux City, formerly of Cherokee, passed away Saturday, Sept. 29, 2018, at Sunrise Retirement Community in Sioux City.

Services will be 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, Oct. 3, at Mt. Olive Baptist Church, rural Aurelia, Iowa. The Rev. Jeff Harris will officiate. Burial will be in Pleasant Hill Cemetery at Aurelia. There will be a family prayer service at 10:15 a.m. Wednesday at the church. Visitation will be 2 to 7 p.m. Tuesday, with the family present 5 to 7 p.m., at Boothby Funeral Home in Cherokee, Iowa. Mildred was born May 5, 1928, at Primghar, Iowa, to Chris and Sarah (Guthridge) Larsen. She graduated from Quimby High School in 1946. She was married to Theo L. Stevenson on March 11, 1949, at the Quimby United Methodist Church. She later attended Buena Vista College in Storm Lake, Iowa, graduating in 1974 with a teaching degree. She taught one year at I.C. Elementary School in Cherokee, and in 1971 began teaching at the Galva (Iowa) Elementary School, where she taught for 20 years. Then, in 1991, she went to Galva–Holstein Middle School until her retirement in 1993. Following her retirement, she would substitute teach in the Cherokee School System.

Mildred was a longtime member of Mt. Olive Baptist Church, Pilot Rock Chapter of the D.A.R., Retired Teachers Association, Retired Mail Carriers Auxiliary, volunteer for the American Cancer Society, and volunteer in the Family Crafts Building at the Cherokee County Fair for many years. She had been a resident of the Sunrise Retirement Community in Sioux City the past five years and prior to this had lived in Cherokee from 1993 through 2013, and prior to this on a farm in Pilot Township, Cherokee County, Iowa, for many years. Mildred was a woman of deep faith in the Lord. She will be remembered as a devoted wife, mother, and grandmother. She will be deeply missed by her family.

She is survived by her two daughters, Karen (Bob) Stark of Thornton, Colo., and Gail (Grant) Haight of Sioux City; a daughter-in-law, Sherri Stevenson of Aurelia, Iowa; five grandchildren, Staci (David) Krier, Suzanne Gustafson, Michael (Allison) Haight, Katie (Josh) Van Den Hul and Lyndsay Stark; six great-grandchildren, Thomas and Jackson Krier, Elizabeth and Victoria Gustafson, Theo Van Den Hul and Olivia Haight; two sisters, Shirley (Dirl) Steffe of Hot Springs, S.D., and Joyce Steffe of Topeka, Kan.; two sisters-in-law, Florence Stevenson of Galva, Iowa, and Bernie Stevenson of Ankeny, Iowa; and numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Theo on Sept. 27, 2008; a son, Thomas in January 1980; a grandson-in-law, Gene Gustafson; and three brothers-in-law, David Steffe, Garold Stevenson and Merlin Stevenson.
