Thomas E. Mitchell, 68, of Sioux City, passed away Monday, Sept. 24, 2018, at a Sioux City hospital due to complications from a lung disease (IPF).

Services will be 10:30 a.m. Friday at Morningside Assembly of God, with the Rev. Johnny Helton officiating. Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery. Visitation will be 4 to 8 p.m. today, with the family present 6 to 8 p.m. and a prayer service at 7 p.m., at Meyer Brothers Morningside Chapel. Thomas was born on Oct. 25, 1949, in Sioux City, the son of John P. "Jack" and Virginia (Rowe) Mitchell. He attended Catholic school in Sioux City and after high school, he earned a computer degree from Western Iowa Tech Community College.

Thomas was united in marriage to Debra Vassar on Nov. 18, 1972 at St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Homer, Neb. Thomas started working for IBM in 1973 and retired in 2006 after 33 years. After retirement, he worked as a consultant for several companies in the computer field.

Tom was very active in the Republican Party and made many friends along the way. He also enjoyed bowling and was a 26-year season ticket holder for the Sioux City Explorers. Tom was on a first name basis with the people at Pflanz and Best Buy in his quest to keep up with the latest and greatest in electronics.

Tom is survived by his wife, Debbie; children, Chad (Michelle) Mitchell, Stephanie Mitchell, and Rachel Callendar; granddaughters, Hannah and Sophia Mitchell; brothers, Mike (Nancy) Mitchell, and Patrick Mitchell; sisters-in-law, Deb Welch, Connie Wasmund, Vicki (Ron) Hoffmen, Susie Terminesi, and Rhonda Wipping; brother-in-law, Sam Terminesi; and many nieces and nephews.

Tom was preceded in death by his parents, Jack and Virginia; brothers, Bert Welch and Gary Mitchell; sister, Sherry Higgenbotham; infant sister, Jackie Mitchell; brothers-in-law, Kent Wasmund and Greg Wipping; and parents-in-law, Bud and Mabel Vassar.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given to the Pulmonary Fibrosis Foundation, 230 East Ohio St. Suite 500 Chicago, IL 60611.
