Freddie Hans Goettsch, Jr., 75, of Sioux City, passed away Friday, Sept. 7, 2018, surrounded by his family.

Services will be held at 11 a.m. Monday at First Lutheran Church. Visitation will be Sunday from 5 to 7 p.m. in the Fireside Room at the church. Arrangements are under the direction of Meyer Brothers Colonial Chapel. Online condolences may be directed to meyerbroschapels.com.

Fred was born the son of Freddie Hans and Lillian (Reimers) Goettsch, Sr. on Nov. 28, 1942, in Holstein, Iowa. Fred grew up on the family farm near Holstein. He graduated from Holstein High School and then attended Norfolk Junior College on a basketball scholarship. He served in the U.S. Army for two years where he was stationed in El Paso, Texas, working at William Beaumont General Hospital as a laboratory technician. Upon completion of his military duty, he attended Morningside College, earning a bachelor of science degree.

Fred married Dorothy Ann Kruse Dec. 28, 1968. This union was blessed with two daughters, Nanette and Stacy.

He began his working career as a medical technologist at St. Joe Hospital. After 30 years, he retired from Mercy Medical Center.

Fred was a member of First Lutheran Church, where he took an active part in working and providing produce for their food pantry. He coached his daughter’s youth softball teams. He was president of the West High Booster Club for two years while his girls were in school there and spent countless hours volunteering for the West High Softball program.

Fred enjoyed pheasant hunting, gardening and attending his grandchildren’s sporting activities. He was proud to have played for the slow pitch softball team that won a state title to move on to the national tournament.

He is survived by his wife, Dorothy Ann Goettsch, of 49 years; daughter, Nanette (Showkat) Mir and their children, Gianna, Sophia and Jasmin Mir; and daughter, Stacy (Wyatt) Hagan and their children, Matthew, Jacob, Tyler, Andrew and Zachary Hagan.

He was preceded in death by his parents; grandson, Hans Mir; brother, Larry Dean; and sister, Mary Ann.
