Carl Baker, Moville, Dies in Crash; Wife Injured

Carl Edmund Baker, 53, widely known Moville farmer, was killed and his wife, Miriam, was injured when their car went off the road, a mile and a half west of Moville, on U.S. 20, mid-morning Tuesday.

Mrs. Baker was taken by McCulloch Ambulance of Moville to St. Joseph Mercy Hospital where she was reported in ‘fair’ condition Tuesday night.

Mrs. Baker has written the column, ‘From the Kitchen Window’ for the Sioux City Journal’s Farm Weekly for the last 17 years. She is a widely known free-lance writer in drama, poetry and history.

The accident occurred about 10:30 a.m. during heavy rain when the Baker car, in the westbound lane of U.S. 20, ran off the roadway on the right side, and rolled over, according to Sgt. Eugene Sims, Iowa highway patrolman who investigates.

Mr. Baker was born November 13, 1916, at Mechanicsville, Iowa. His father was the late Rev. W. N. Baker, a Methodist minister in northwest Iowa for 50 years.

During years he was growing up, Mr. Baker lived in Washta, Castana, Sioux City, Lake View, and Early, Iowa. He was a 1939 graduate of Iowa State University with a major in poultry husbandry.
He married Miriam Hawthorn June 21, 1941, in Sioux City.

Mr. Baker served in the army of occupation following World War II.

He lived in the Moville community since 1943 and was engaged in farming.

Mr. Baker served on the administrative board of the United Methodist Church and the agriculture communities of the Moville Chamber of Commerce.

He was a 4-H project leader and currently was on the board of the Western Iowa Telephone Association. He also currently served on the Woodbury County Farm Bureau board of directors.

He was a member of the Wink-Sparks Post, American Legion, Moville, the National Turkey Federation, and the Angus Breeders Association.

Survivors include the widow; two sons, Kent, a senior at Iowa State University, Ames, and Dale a sophomore at Iowa Lakes Community College, Estherville; three brothers, Dr. Weldon N. Baker of Charleston, Ill., Francis of Dallas, Tex., Philip of Early; and a sister, Mrs. J.L. DeGarmo of Mason City, Iowa.

A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday at the United Methodist (Federated) Church at Moville. The Rev. John Dowd will officiate. Burial will be in Arlington Cemetery at Moville under the direction of McCulloch Funeral Home.
