Bessie Vearle Smith Eyres, 1907-1989

Lawton, Iowa – Bessie V. Eyres, 81, of Lawton died Monday, Jan. 9, 1989, in a Sioux City hospital after a brief illness.

Graveside services will be at 10:30 a.m. Thursday in Union Township Cemetery. A memorial service will be at 2 p.m. Thursday in Community Presbyterian Church in Lawton with Dr. Robert E. Peters officiating. Visitation will be from 5-9 p.m. today in McCulloch Funeral Home in Moville with a prayer service at 7:30 p.m. Dr. Howard Marty will officiate.

Mrs. Eyres, the former Bessie Vearle Smith, was born Dec. 26, 1907, in Central City, Neb., daughter of Rev. Walter E. and Frankie M. (Giles) Smith. She graduated from Union Township High School and attended Western Union College (now Westmar College). She married R.G. Eyres Feb. 22, 1928, at Union Township Presbyterian Church, Le Mars. They farmed near Le Mars and Kingsley until moving to Lawton in 1982.

Mrs. Eyres was an active 63-year member of Union Township Presbyterian Church and was an affiliate member of Community Presbyterian Church at Lawton.

Survivors include her husband; three daughters, Mrs. Dwight L (Lola) Haskins of Lawton, Mrs. Philip (DeLoris) Hayden of Kingman, Ariz., and Phyllis Peterson of Sioux City; four sons and daughters in law, Robert S. and Nancy Eyres of Muskogee, Okla., Ronald D and Orpha Eyres of Castle Hill, Australia, A. Michael and Sherry Eyres of Cheyenne, Wyo., and Kenneth D and Joan Eyres of Lawton; 17 grandchildren and 12 great grandchildren.
