Raymond W. Shupe, 76, of Hornick, Iowa, died at his residence on Tuesday, January 26, 1993.

He was born August 17, 1916, near Sloan, Iowa, the son of Carl and Flora Etta (Irwin) Shupe. He married Irma V. Glover on April 19, 1941, at Dakota City, Nebraska. He served in the U.S. Air Force during World War II. Upon returning from the service he farmed in the Hornick-Smithland area until 1952. The family lived at Luton from 1952 until returning to rural Hornick in 1954 where he operated Rays Electric until his retirement. They moved into Hornick in 1976.

He was a member of the Hornick United Methodist Church and Hindman-Steel American Legion Post #492.

He is survived by his wife, Irma of Hornick; four daughters, Rosetta Hill of Raytown, Missouri, Gloria Jean Hamil of Reno, Nevada, Sharon Bennett of Chicago, Illinois and Marcia and her husband, Richard Iverson of Reno, Nevada; seven sons, Dennis Ray and his wife, Linda of Whiting, David and his wife, Janice of Lawton, Michael and his wife, Diana of Chino, California, Mark and his wife, Linda of Hornick, Douglas and his wife, Lela of Hornick, John and his wife, Susie of Romeoville, Illinois and Jeffrey and his wife, Aletta of Joplin, Missouri; one brother, Howard Shupe of Sioux City; one sister, Ruby Pittman and her husband, Glen of Onawa; 26 grandchildren and 5 great-grandchildren; seven half-brothers, Edgar, Ernest and his wife Leila, Duane, Donnie, Gary, Robert and Ricky; and eight half-sisters, Betty Jean Cleveland, Evonne Baker, Mary McInerney, Phyllis Bauer, Margaret Bauman, Vera Ann Copple, Nancy Ankrom and Debbie Paulsen.

He was preceded in death by his father and mother, a brother, Herschel; and his step-mother, Alta Shupe, on January 28, 1993.

Funeral services were held at 10:00 AM Friday, January 29, 1993 at United Methodist Church, Hornick, Iowa, with Rev. Karen Dearches officiating. The organist was Mrs. Thomas Stangl and the vocal duet, Jack Steinhoff and Gerald Beckstrom, sang, “The Old Rugged Cross” and “Take My Hand Precious Lord.”

Casket bearers were Dennis Ray Shupe, David Shupe, Michael Shupe, Mark Shupe, Douglas Shupe, John Shupe and Jeffrey Shupe.

Interment was in Memorial Park Cemetery, Sioux City, Iowa with Military Graveside Services by Hindman-Steele American Legion Post #492, Hornick, Iowa, Ronald Kerr, Commander. Arrangments were by Wood Funeral Home, Sloan, Iowa.
