Alexander "Alex" James Emery, 26, formerly of Sioux City, passed away unexpectedly the first week of May 2018, in Philadelphia, Pa.

In lieu of flowers or donations, the family is collecting stories, pictures, thoughts, and memories to be shared in a book at a private family service later this summer. The family encourages everyone grieving with them to share their favorite memories of Alex by emailing them to memoriesofalexemery@gmail.com.

Alex was born on March 21, 1992, in Barrington, Ill., to Dan and Lori Emery. He grew up in Coppell, Texas. Alex had many passions throughout his youth but settled into his love of music after learning to play the bass guitar. He was fortunate enough to learn directly from Victor Wooten, Chuck Rainey, and Dweezil Zappa during his teenage years. In January 2012, Alex and his family moved to Sioux City, where he joined the music scene of Siouxland as a member of several bands that played local venues and beyond.

Alex was well versed in all aspects of musicology, loved philosophical debates, was an avid reader, and had a widely diverse group of friends from all parts of the world. Despite more than a decade of professional help, Alex struggled with mental wellness that was complicated by addiction in his later years. Yet through it all, he was a beacon of support to his friends, caring for all he knew and loved, and bringing people together through his friendship.

Left to cherish his memory include his parents, Dan and Lori Emery; brother, Robert (Shannon) Emery; sister, Tracy (Daniel) Simoneau; sister, Andrea Emery; grandmother, Mary Elizabeth Emery; multiple uncles, aunts, and cousins; and two niblings.
