Geo. B. Whittemore Dies In Los Angeles
Former City Treasurer Was Well Known to the People of Sioux City

Word was received in Sioux City Saturday night telling of the death of George B. Whittemore, formerly of Sioux City at Sierra Madre, California. The message was sent by Rev. George H. Cornell, formerly pastor of St. Thomas Episcopal Church.

Death was said to be due to pleurisy and an attack of heart disease. Mr. Whittemore left Sioux City last spring because of his health and had gone from Portland to California in search of a beneficial climate. He was accompanied by his wife and his son, Harold. Both were with him at the time of death.

Mr. Whittemore was prominent in local politics, at one time having served as city treasurer, to which office he was elected by the Democratic Party. Later, he was democratic candidate for clerk of the supreme court of Iowa and at one time served as exalted ruler of Sioux City Lodge No. 112, B.P.O.E.

Came Here From Texas

The deceased man came to Sioux City in 1890 from Texarkana, Texas and was employed by the Sioux City Oatmeal Company. He later was engaged in the banking business until he bought the bakery at present operated by Hutchinson Bros. He sold that business to enter politics. He was married in 1894 to Miss Jennie McKewon, of this city. At the time of his death, Mr. Whittemore was the Pacific coast representative of the Hanford Produce Company.

Besides his immediate family, Mr. Whittemore is survived by his mother, Mrs. Celia Whittemore; his brother J.H. Whittemore, secretary and treasurer of the Hanford Company and his sister, Mrs. Harry A. Gooch, all living in Sioux City.

Funeral to Be Here

The body is expected to arrive in this city Friday. The funeral probably will be held Sunday afternoon under the auspices of the Elks. Burial will be in Logan Park Cemetery. The Elks of Pasadena have notified the local Lodge that they will hold funeral services in Pasadena before sending the body to Sioux City.
