Mrs Mary E. Heppe 1852 - 1946

Mrs. Mary E. Heppe, 93, said to be the oldest member of the First Baptist Church, died Monday at her home, 3436 Sixth Avenue.

Mrs. Heppe was born December 18, 1852, in Philadelphia. She was married to John Heppe at Philadelphia in 1876. They came to Sioux City in 1886. Mr. Heppe, a buyer at the stockyards, died here in 1928.

Mrs. Heppe was prominent in church and lodge circles here for many years. She was a charter member and a past matron of Isis Chapter, O.E.S. and a past state officer of the order.

In an interview on her 90th birthday, Mrs. Heppe related how as a schoolgirl she took clean linen to school to make up into bandages for union soldiers. She recalled also passing by the bier of President Lincoln.

Surviving are a daughter-in-law, Mrs. Lydia B. Heppe of Sioux City, a grandson, Clarence Heppe, chief pharmacist mate with the naval forces; three granddaughters, Mrs. William Townley of Sioux City, Sister Celeste Marie of St. Catherine’s, Kentucky and Mrs. Preston La Schier of Sioux City and nine great-grandchildren.

The funeral will be held at 3:30 p.m. Wednesday in the West-Heaton Chapel. Rev. S.D. Huff officiate and interment will be in Graceland Park Cemetery.
