Funeral Monday For Man Who Killed Self

Funeral services were conducted at Sac City, Iowa, Monday afternoon for Charles A. Matson, 53, janitor for a Sioux City theater, who shot himself in the head Saturday night while standing by the graves of his mother and sister in the Sac City Cemetery. He died of the wound late Saturday night in a Sac City hospital.

Rev. Corwin Taylor, pastor of the Sac City Methodist Church, officiating at the services in Neal’s Funeral Home at Sac City.

Mr. Matson went to Sac City Saturday to visit his 101-year-old father, George Matson, a Civil War Veteran. He went to the cemetery at 11 a.m. and after talking to John Phillips, sexton, went to the family plot.

Phillips heard the shot and saw Matson fall on the graves. Clutched in Matson’s hand was a note: “Please let my family know at once.” Matson was taken to the hospital where it was learned the bullet had entered his right temple and emerged at the top of his head.

Matson and his family resided at 416 Omaha, Sioux City.

Survivors include his widow, Ellen, two daughters, Lucille and Vivian; a son, Donald, all of Sioux City and his father.
