Gertrude A. Uhl, 93, of Sioux City died Saturday, July 9, 2005, at Bickford Cottage after a long and happy life.

Services will be 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at St. Joseph Catholic Church, with the Rev. Gary B. Snyder officiating. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery. Visitation will be 1 to 9 p.m. Tuesday, with a 4 p.m. rosary recited by the Catholic Daughters of America and a parish vigil service at 7 p.m., at Larkin Northside Funeral Home.

The former Gertrude Ann Garvin was born on July 25, 1911, in Marcus, Iowa, the daughter of Joseph and Margaret (O'Reilly) Garvin. She was raised in Marcus and was valedictorian of Holy Name High School in Marcus.

She married Lester R. Uhl on Jan. 5, 1931, in Marcus. The couple farmed at Climbing Hill the first three years and then moved to Sioux City to raise turkeys and farm until Lester died in 1996.

She was a member of St. Joseph's Catholic Church, Catholic Daughters of America, Rosary Society, Catholic Women's League and was very active in the Democratic Party in the past. She was very proud of her rosary making for the missions, sending over 2,000 rosaries overseas, and everyone who knew her received their own handmade rosary from her.

Survivors include two sons, David and his wife, Lynn and Patrick, all of Omaha, Neb.; three daughters and their husbands, Marlene and Leigh Stull of Des Moines, Iowa, Ramona and Dick Plendl of Kingsley, Iowa and Luann and Bob Bertrand of Sioux City; a daughter-in-law, Agnes Cox of Lincoln, Neb.; a brother, Kenneth of Bull Head City, Ariz.; a brother-in-law, Bernard Uhl of Lakewood, Calif.; four sisters-in-law, Irma Nice of Salinas, Calif., Ruth and Ralph Nice of Salem, Ore., Herthel Uhl of Sioux City and Peg Uhl of Des Moines; 27 grandchildren; 68 great-grandchildren; nine great-great-grandchildren; and many beloved nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Lester, on Oct. 18, 1996; a son, Ronald on Nov. 9, 1971; a daughter, Norma (White) Brown on June 15, 1997; a granddaughter, Natalie Uhl on Christmas Day 1984; three sisters; and six brothers.
