Ankeny, Iowa, formerly of Sioux City and Dakota Dunes

Sylvia Jean Elerick, 74, of Ankeny, formerly of Sioux City and Dakota Dunes, passed away on May 1, 2018, at Mill Pond Retirement Community in Ankeny, following a courageous battle with kidney disease.

The body will be cremated per her wishes. Memorial services will be 7 p.m. Wednesday, May 9, at Nelson-Berger Northside Chapel, 822 Jennings Street, with Christian Jensen officiating. Online condolences may be expressed at www.meyerbroschapels.com.

She was born Sylvia Jean Gould on Jan. 23, 1944, in Sioux City, the daughter of John "Jack" and Dorothy (Peterson) Gould. She graduated from Central High School in Sioux City in 1962, and attended Iowa State University from 1962–1964. She married Brian K. Elerick of Jefferson, Iowa, on Jan. 13, 1974. They had one child, David A. Elerick.

She worked in the banking industry for 13 years, seven years at Home State Bank in Jefferson, Iowa, and six years at First Star Bank in Sioux City, serving as a personal banker and marketing coordinator. She was employed by the Job Training Partnership in 1992, and retired in June 2011. She served four years in the Youth Program working with youth at risk, one year in the Dislocated Worker Program assisting dislocated workers in receiving additional training, or finding new employment after they lost their jobs through layoffs or business closings.

She then transferred to the PROMISE JOBS program in the office, where she served those receiving cash welfare to help them complete their basic education, possibly go on for further training, or develop skills to help them get and keep a job so they could work their way off welfare. She was a PROMISE JOBS case manager for the last 14 of the 19 years in the office.

Ms. Elerick previously served on the board of Siouxland Youth Athletics, and the advisory board of the Siouxland Chapter of the Red Cross. She enjoyed being with her family, getting together with friends frequently, writing, reading, playing bridge, and discussing politics.

She is survived by a son, David A. Elerick of Ankeny, Iowa; two aunts, Rosemary Gould of Sioux City, and Alice Guillaume of Jefferson Hills, Pa.; two uncles, John Peterson of Fort Wayne, Ind., and Dell Peterson of Colorado Springs, Colo.; two stepdaughters, Beth Elerick and Debra Elerick-Monthei, both of Jefferson, Iowa; and several cousins.

She was preceded in death by her parents; two uncles, Richard Gould of Sergeant Bluff, and George Guillaume of Jefferson Hills, Pa.; and three aunts, Louise (Peterson) Jackson of Sioux City, Rita Pinyard of Oak Harbor, Wash., and Louise Peterson of Colorado Springs.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to The Paralyzed Veterans Association, or the Noah's Hope Animal Rescue of Sioux City.
