Sioux City Veteran, LeMars Women Die in Highway Crash

Four Others Injured When Cars Collide at Intersection

Two persons were injured fatally and four others were injured in a collision of automobiles Sunday morning at the intersection of highway 75 and 33 one and a half miles north of LeMars.

The dead were Mrs. George Rentschler, 77, resident of LeMars and Gerhardt Weber, 39, 1004 Ninth Street, Sioux City war veteran. Mrs. Rentschler died Sunday noon and Weber, her son-in-law died Sunday night. George Rentschler, 76, husband of the dead women, was described as in a critical condition.

Sheriff Frank Scholer of Plymouth County said Monday, that the automobile in which Mrs. Rentschler was a passenger was going north on highway 75 and a Nebraska car involved in the accident was traveling south on highway 33.

The sheriff was assisted in his investigation by Police Chief Faye Perpening of LeMars.

The four injured persons were in Sacred Heart Hospital in Le Mars and an executive said Monday noon the barring complications they should recover. They are Mr. Rentschler, Mrs. Weber, 41, Sioux City, Dr. Page Palmer, 57, Nebraska State Hospital, Ingleside, Nebraska and George F. Flexner, 67, also of Nebraska State Hospital. Mrs. George Flexner, a passenger in the automobile bearing the Nebraska license, was un-injured.

Mr. Weber came to America from Germany about 24 years ago. During the war he served as an interpreter and was stationed at one time at Algona, Iowa where a prisoner of war camp was located. He was married in December of last year and had been employed as a tailor for the Morey Clothes shop in Sioux City.

Mr. Weber was born January 29, 1907 at Bremerhaven, Germany. He was married to Bertha Rentschler, daughter of Mrs. George Rentschler, December 9, 1945.

Survivors include the widow, two sisters, Mrs. Gerd Lubben of Norcross, Minnesota and Mrs. Helen Fencel of Wilhelmshaven, Germany and his father, Albert Weber.

Mrs. Caroline Sophia Rentschler was born May 12, 1869, in Clayton County, Iowa.

Survivors include the widower, George Rentschler, four daughters, Mrs. Cora Ahrndt of Inwood, Iowa, Mrs. Laura Dominick of near Struble, Iowa, Mrs. Weber of Sioux City and Mrs. Lillian Sheeler of Larchwood, Iowa, two sons, George Jr. and Louis, both of Inwood; four brothers, two sisters and 15 grandchildren.

Services for both the crash victims will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday at the St. John’s Lutheran Church in LeMars under direction of Mauer’s Funeral Home of Le Mars.
