Mary McInerney, 75, of Sioux Falls, formerly of Sioux City, died Saturday, March 31, 2018, at Dougherty Hospice in Sioux Falls.

Services will be 11 a.m. Wednesday at Christ The King Catholic Church in Sioux Falls. Visitation will begin noon Tuesday, with the family present 5 to 7 p.m., and a 6 p.m. prayer service, at Miller Southside Chapel, 7400 W. Minnesota Ave. in Sioux Falls (81st and Minnesota Avenue). Mary Ruth Shupe was born May 5, 1941, to Carl and Alta (Duncan) Shupe, in Sioux City. She was raised in Hornick, Iowa, where she graduated from high school in 1959. Following her graduation, Mary attended Nettleton Business School. She then worked as a secretary for the Girl Scouts and the Sioux City Museum.

On Nov. 16, 1963, Mary was united in marriage to Michael McInerney in Sioux City. The couple made their home in Sioux City, and Mary became a homemaker and loving mother to their children. Mary also worked in the family transport business.

Mary took up the game of tennis when she was in her 30s. She quickly became an avid tennis player. She loved the social aspects of the game and also played competitively. Mary passed the love for the game onto her children. Mary and the family enjoyed fishing trips to the boundary waters Lake of the Woods. In her free time, she enjoyed watching college basketball and always would look forward to the summer months when she could plant her extensive flower and vegetable gardens.

Later in life, Mary and Mike began wintering in Henderson, Nev. She cherished her three granddaughters and two grandsons. They meant the world to her. Friendly, outgoing and kind, Mary’s caring spirit will be forever treasured.

Grateful for having shared her life are her husband, Michael V. McInerney of Sioux Falls; sons, Michael J. McInerney (Katie) of Sioux Falls, Timothy F. McInerney (Joanne) of Lombard, Ill., and Richard J. McInerney of Henderson, Nev.; grandsons, John Harrington of Chicago, and Timothy J. McInerney of Lombard, Ill.; granddaughters, Erin McInerney of Iowa City, Iowa, Emily McInerney of Ames, Iowa, and Eve McInerney of Sioux Falls; brother, Rick Shupe; sisters, Vera Copple (Morey), Nancy Shelley (Joe), Margaret Bauman, and Debbie Poulsen (Ken).

She was preceded in death by her parents; six brothers, Edgar, Ernest, Duane, Robert, Gary and Dan; sisters, Betty, Evonne and Phyllis; and four step siblings, Raymond, Hershel, Ruby and Howard.
