Houston, Texas, formerly of Sioux City

Shirley Goodman Fish, 87, of Houston, Texas, formerly of Sioux City, passed away peacefully in her home on Tuesday, March 20, 2018, surrounded by her family and loved ones.

Services were held Friday, March 23, 2018, at Emanu El Memorial Gardens in Houston, Texas.

Shirley was born and raised in Chicago, Ill., where she met and fell in love with her husband, Laurence Fish, who was visiting from Sioux City, Iowa. The couple only knew each other several days when they became engaged and were married less than three months later. They celebrated their 50th anniversary shortly before Laurence’s death in July 2003.

Shirley and Laurence moved to Houston in 1985 to be closer to their family after spending more than 30 years in Sioux City. They embraced their new hometown and enjoyed the warm weather. You could often find them working in their yard, and they were frequent recipients of Yard of the Month award. Shirley was the consummate caregiver. She found great pride in caring for Laurence as he courageously fought the cancer that eventually took his life.

An avid dog lover, Shirley always had numerous four-legged companions to keep her company. One of her greatest passions was investing in the stock market and she had a skill for picking the winners.

She is survived by her beloved children, Scott Fish and his fiancée, Andrea Thyssen, Marsha Fish Sweeney and Greg Bennett, and Douglas Fish and his wife, Sheryl. She is also survived by her grandchildren, Aaron Fish and wife, Jamie, Adam Fish and wife, Miriam, Stacie Lenzen and husband David, Heather Hix and husband, Brian, Harrison Sweeney, Annie Sweeney, Sarah and Lindsey Fish as well as eight great-grandchildren.

Shirley was preceded in death by her parents, Annie and Sam Goodman; her husband, Laurence; her brother, Roy Goodman; and her sister, Florence Fish.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Good Shepherd Rescue & Sanctuary of Texas (goodshepherdrescuetexas.com) or a charity of your choice.
