Donald "Don" LeRoy Loomis, 77, of Sioux City, entered the gates of heaven Monday, Jan. 1, 2018, following a brief illness.

A celebration of life will be 2 p.m. Wednesday in Dakota City Cemetery, with the Rev. Michael Ring officiating. Arrangements are under the direction of Mohr Funeral Home in South Sioux City.

Don was born on June 18, 1940, in Sioux City, the son of Harold Loomis and Marie Dorothy (Carver) Davis. He spent the first 33 years of his life living at Woodward Resource Center in Woodward, Iowa. He moved to Des Moines and lived in the Drake University neighborhood, where it was by chance he met the late Dr. R. Dean Wright, a Drake University sociology professor, and that was life-changing for Don. Wright invited Don into his classes to speak about his life, and students were amazed and inspired by his life story. Throughout the years, he shared his life story with more than 4,000 students and health care workers.

Each year at Thanksgiving, Don would open his home and make a large Thanksgiving meal (including his famous republican beans) for those who may have otherwise gone without. Don was a great friend to many.

He was preceded in death by his parents; four brothers, Rodney, Raymond, Harold and Duane; and one sister, Annette (Davis) Bowman.
