Gregory “Greg” Alan Hanson, 62, of Sioux City, passed away peacefully on Saturday, Jan. 20, 2018. Greg had a lifelong battle with Juvenile Diabetes, and the many other health complications that can come with it, since the age of 12. Greg remained strong in his fight and even up to the end he had an inner strength and resolve, along with his faith in the Lord, that kept him in the fight.

Memorial services will be 11 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 27 at First Christian Church (2101 Jackson St.) in Sioux City with Pastor Ken Wells officiating. Meyer Brothers Colonial Chapel is in charge of arrangements. Online condolences may be expressed at www.meyerbroschapels.com.

Greg was born born on Aug. 23, 1955 to Patsy and Loren Hanson and grew up in Sioux City. He was the oldest of five boys. He attended Central and graduated from North High in 1973. He was an avid scout, loved hunting, trapping, and fishing with his good friend Rodney and his four brothers. Greg loved the Oregon Coast and the time he spent there.

Greg married Linda DeBondt on May 24, 1974. They had five children together. His children have fond memories of the times they spent together. Greg was an accomplished martial arts master. He achieved black belts in taekwondo, aikido and judo, after becoming blind at the age of 28. He was also a judo instructor and computer consultant. He attended Briar Cliff and graduated from the University of Iowa, with honors, in 1993. Greg loved his Iowa Hawkeyes, dragons, and his service dogs, Mindy, Jake and Juno who were his companions over the years. Almost every Sunday, Greg spent time at his mother’s home after church services. This was family time, as everyone would come over, have lunch, chat and catch up, and have wine, cheese and crackers.

Greg is survived by his mother, Patsy (Walter) Morrow of Sioux City; his four brothers and their families, Steven (Amy) Hanson of Sioux City, Brian (Deanne) Hanson of Hinton Iowa, Thomas (Roxanne) Hanson of South Weber, Utah and Darin Hanson of Sioux City; his five children, Sara (Kelly) Dobbs of Sioux City, Jason Hanson of Hull, Iowa, Carrie (Kevin) Frazier of Marietta, Ga., Lana (Steve) DeJager of Reeds Spring, Mo. and Lindsay Schwebach of Sheldon, Iowa along with 15 grandchildren, as well as many other family members, close and special friends.

Greg was preceded in death by his grandparents; his father, Loren R. Hanson and his granddaughter, Shianne Lorraine Faye Schwebach.

He fought the good fight. He finished his course. He kept the Faith.
