Russell Kenneth Clingenpeel, 86, of South Sioux City, passed away Sunday, Jan. 21, 2018, after a brief illness.

Memorial services will be 2 p.m. Saturday at Hope Lutheran Church, 218 W. 18th St. in South Sioux City, with the Rev. Michael Awe officiating. Additional parking at the church is available behind the church on W. 19th St. There will be a flag presentation by the American Legion Cownie Post 307. Visitation will be 4 to 8 p.m. Friday,with the family present 6 to 8 p.m., at Meyer Brothers Colonial Chapel. A luncheon will follow the memorial service at the American Legion, 109 E. 19th St. in South Sioux City. Online condolences may be given at www.meyerbroschapels.com.

Russell was born on May 6, 1931, in Hornick, Iowa, the son of Oscar and Sydna (Samuelson) Clingenpeel. He attended school in Hornick and graduated with the Sloan Westwood School System. After graduation, Russ enlisted in the U.S. Army and served in France and Germany with the occupational forces during the Korean Conflict.

Russell married Phyllis Jungwirth on Sept. 19, 1951 in Sioux City. He spent his career working in the foundry industry to include the Iowa Foundry, The North American Foundry in Ft. Smith, Arkansas, and the Sioux City Foundry where he later retired as the Superintendent after 40 years of employment.

Russell enjoyed life. He loved to read and garden, especially growing tomatoes and his fruit trees. He was an avid fisherman, and enjoyed hunting for many years with his good buddy, Doc Buttermore. Russell belonged to several organizations including the River City Anglers, National Rifle Association, American Legion Cownie Post 307, where he was the commander for four years, Sergeant of Arms for many years in which he assisted in many military funerals, and Post Everlasting ceremonies at Legion conventions. Russell also belonged to the VFW, and was an instructor for the Hunter Safety Program in South Sioux City. He raised pheasants as a hobby with the American Legion for the State of Nebraska for many years. Russell was a proud blood donor, donating more than 10 gallons of blood. After retirement, Russell and Phyllis enjoyed their winters camping in South Padre, Texas for nine years. He was a member of Hope Lutheran Church.

Russell is survived by his wife, Phyllis; a daughter, JoZell Engel of South Sioux City; two sons, Donald (Stephanie) of Italy, Texas, and Ronald (Kris) of Sioux City; a daughter-in-law, Flo of Parrottsville, Tenn.; two sisters, Irene McCellan of Onawa, Iowa, and Leila Shupe of Omaha; 11 grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and many nieces, nephews, relatives, and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Oscar and Sydna Clingenpeel; his father and mother-in-law, George and Francis Jungwirth; a son, Douglas; four brothers, Clarence, Donald, Leonard, and Art; three brothers-in-law, Lawrence, Bill, and Ray; two sisters-in-law, Flo and Kay; and two grandsons, Kirk and John.

Russell had an outstanding personality and could carry on conversations with anyone and will truly by missed by all.

Memorials may be given to the South Sioux City American Legion in Russell's memory.
