Virginia “Gidge” Hurni, 90, met her Lord on Jan. 29 in Sioux City. She gave so much of her heart to those who were fortunate enough to know her over her 90 years and she finally decided to save some of it for those she will meet again. From her birth to her passing on Jan. 29, 2018, she nourished those around her with faith and love.

Visitation will be on Thursday, Feb. 1 at Meyer Brothers Colonial Chapel. Rosary will begin at 4 p.m. with family members present from 4-8 p.m. and the vigil at 7:00 p.m. Funeral services will be held at St. Michael's Church in Sioux City at 10 a.m. Friday with Fr. Peter Duc Hung Nguyen officiating. This will be followed by interment at Calvary Cemetery and then a luncheon at St. Michael's.

She was born Sept. 18, 1927 in Sergeant Bluff to Harry and Melissa (Betz) Hansen, the eldest of six children. She spent most of her life in Sioux City. Central High School was her Alma Mater where she graduated in 1945. On October 10, 1946, she married the love of her life, Harold "Buggs" Hurni. Buggs met his Lord on June 26, 2005.

Gidge was a long-time member of St. Michael's Church in Sioux City. She worked for many years as a luncheon cook for St. Michael's grade school and also for their famous fish dinners.

She is most notably remembered for over 50 years of volunteer work with the Girl Scouts. She has indelibly influenced hundreds and hundreds of young girls with her dedication and commitment to building the courage, confidence and character of her Scouts by the lessons she taught and her personal example. She was also involved with Cub Scouts and Headid Little League with her husband for many years. In 1979, Gidge and Buggs were chosen as “Siouxpersons” for their involvement with youth.

Family dinners were very special to her when celebrating birthdays and the holidays. She loved making special cakes for her children and especially for the younger family members. She enjoyed sewing and gardening and her Girl Scouts will attest to the fact that she loved camping with them and with her own family.

Gidge is survived by four children, David (Carley) Hurni of El Mirage, Ariz., Diane (Rod) Gaskell of Sioux City, Darwin (Beverly) Hurni of Sioux City and Roxanne (Gary) Nelson of Lee's Summit, Mo. She has nine grandchildren, Alexi (Bob) Heien, Travis Hurni, Chad (Anne) Gaskell, Melissa (Nick) Gritzmaker, Curtis (Rebecca) Gaskell, Joshua (Elizabeth) Hurni, Sarah (Doug) Urick, John (Andrea) Hurni and Ally (Adam) Stein and 24 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; her five brothers, Bob, Dick, Don, Jerry and Billy and a great-grandson, Charlie Gaskell.

Gidge. We will always carry your memory in our hearts that you have filled with love.
