Oto councilman dies in Sioux City

Oto, Iowa-- Eli E. Gardner, 71, of Oto, six-year member of the Oto City Council, died Thursday in a Sioux City hospital after a brief illness.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Monday at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Oto with the Rev. Gerald Zensen officiating. Burial will be in the Little Sioux Township Cemetery at Smithland. Military graveside services will be conducted by Little Sioux Valley Post 1924 of Oto and Leslie Seaton Post 666 American Legion of Smithland. At Walter Funeral Home in Anthon, visitation will be after 2 p.m. Sunday with the rosary recited at 7 p.m.

Mr. Gardner was born June 24, 1915, near Rodney. He married Ferne Ferdig on June 16, 1941 in Dakota City, Nebraska. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II. The couple lived in the Rodney, Hornick and Smithland communities before moving into Oto in 1979. He had worked for Joe Slota in Mapleton and had also been a school bus mechanic for Westwood Schools for 17 years before retiring in 1980.

He was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church, VFW and American Legion.

Mr. Gardner had been a city council member in Oto for the last six years.

Survivors include his wife, two sons, Larry of Hornick and Dennis of Moville, one brother, Roy of Council, Washington and four grandchildren.
