Sioux City Journal
17 November 2004

Marcella Doretta (DeMay) Millard, 83, of Sioux City died Wednesday, Nov. 17, 2004.

Services will be 10 a.m. Saturday at Methodist Church in Dunlap, Iowa. Visitation will begin at 1 p.m. Friday, with the family present 6 to 7:30 p.m., at Fouts Funeral Home in Dunlap.

Marcella was born Dec. 6, 1920, on a farm outside of Denison, Iowa, to Henry and Doretta (Meggers) DeMay. She married Dale Millard on Jan. 1, 1940, in Sioux City. They were married for 55 years. Dale died in August 1995.

For many years, she owned and operated Marcella's Fitness Club, where she taught fitness to many women. Upon her retirement, she was an avid gardener of vegetables and flowers. It has been said by many that she grew the biggest and best tomatoes in all of Iowa. She enjoyed telling stories of being the oldest of 12 children, growing up on a farm and stories of hardships and many good times.

She was always the core and rock of the family. She was the one that held all things together in the bad times. Although she was an optimist, she always found many things to keep her worried because she cared so much. She will be missed by her sons, "The Boys" as she called them and all who knew her.

She is survived by three sons and their wives, Duke and Judy Millard of Dumas, Texas, Short and Fred Millard of Augusta, Ga., and Nick and Margaret Millard of Sioux City; 12 grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; and many other relatives and friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; and a son, Edmund "Hez" Millard in 1986.
