21 January 2000Emma Cherkas, 90, of Sioux City died Wednesday 19, 2000, at Holy Spirit Retirement Center following a brief illness.
Services will be at 1 p.m. Saturday at Grace United Methodist Church with the Rev. Sheryl K. Ashley officiating. Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery. Visitation will be 3 to 8 p.m. today, with the family present 6 to 8 p.m. at Christy-Smith Morningside Chapel.
Mrs. Cherkas was born November 1, 1909 in Sioux City, the daughter of Paul and Rose (Luthkovich) Reback. She was raised in Sioux City and attended Sioux City schools.
She married Anthony “Tony” Cherkas on May 21, 1927 in Elk Point, S.D. He died August 2, 1992.
She was a member of Grace United Methodist Church and enjoyed gardening, sewing, and cooking.
Survivors include three sons, Robert and Richard and his wife, Jean, all of Sioux City and Ron and his wife, Nancy of Des Moines; 12 grandchildren and 27 great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by a daughter, Betty Bornholtz, a sister, Olga Goodrich, a brother, Harry Reback and a grandson, Scott Cherkas.
Pallbearers will be Kurt, Brad and Kevin Bornholtz, Tony, Bob, Peter and Steve Cherkas and Troy Kramersmeier.
