Oto, Iowa -- Mrs. Gilbert Downing, 71, of Oto, died unexpectedly Monday on arrival at a Sioux City hospital of an apparent heart attack.

Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Thursday in the United Church of Christ in Oto. The Rev. Robert Pike will officiate. Burial will be in the Oto Cemetery. There will be a prayer service at 7 p.m. Wednesday in the Walter Funeral Home in Anthon.

Mrs. Downing, the former Mildred Livermore, was born April 7, 1911 in Battle Creek and was a lifelong Oto resident.

She married Gilbert Downing January 16, 1934 in Oto.

She was a cook at the Woodbury County Home for several years. The couple owned and operated the Downing Resort at Brown’s Lake for 27 years, retiring three years ago.

She was a ember of the United Church of Christ, Oto Mite Society, Henry McKenna Post 651, American Legion Auxiliary and Little Sioux Valley Post 9124, VFW Auxiliary of Oto.

Survivors include her husband; a daughter, Mrs. Lawayne (Reba) Downey of Anthon; a son, Marvin of Oto, two brothers, Walter and Carl, both of Oto; six grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
