Mrs. Mary Silena Cook, 72, of Smithland, a longtime news correspondent for weekly newspapers, died unexpectedly Friday at her home.

Mrs. Cook was born June 14, 1886, at Persia, Iowa. She was married August 3, 1910 at Climbing Hill, Iowa to John Cook. She had lived at Smithland for the last 40 years.

She was a member of the Methodist Church, Order of Eastern Star and the American Legion Auxiliary.

Survivors are the widower, a daughter, Mrs. Zelma Bray of Mapleton, Iowa, three sons, Alva of Cherokee, Clifford of Havelock, Iowa and Dale of Shenandoah, Iowa, three brothers, William Kirkpatrick of Smithland, Craft Kirkpatrick of Danbury and Marvin Kirkpatrick of El Cerrito, California, a half-sister, Julie West of Fairview, Oklahoma and five grandchildren.

Funeral services will be at 2:30 p.m. Sunday at the Smithland Methodist Church. Rev. John Rogers will officiate and burial will be at Smithland with the Willman Funeral Home of Rodney, Iowa.
