Wayland R. "Sam" Zimmerman, 73, of Sioux City, passed away Friday, Sept. 15, 2017, at a local hospital.

A celebration of his life will be 11 a.m. Wednesday at Waterbury Funeral Service of Sioux City. Following a luncheon, graveside services will be held in Stanton Township Cemetery at Merrill, Iowa. Family visitation will begin at 10 a.m. Wednesday.

Wayland "Sam" Zimmerman was born on Aug. 22, 1944, in Le Mars, Iowa, to Roy and Wilma Zimmerman. His father’s farming occupation led the family to live in several locations in Iowa, Minnesota, and Nebraska before moving to Wayne, Neb. Wayland graduated from Wayne High School.

While in high school, Wayland met Joyce Dangberg and they were united in marriage on Oct. 3, 1964. They resided in Carroll and Ponca, Neb., until they moved to Vermillion, S.D. The couple were blessed with three daughters, Nadyne, Nicki, and Heidi.

Later on, Wayland moved to Sioux City, and married Susan Newell on April 13, 1985. They were also blessed with three children, Megan, Michael, and Michelle.

After high school, Sam worked as a butcher in grocery stores in Pierce and Ponca, Neb. He then became interested in the camping business and spent most of his adult life selling recreational vehicles. He will be remembered as a "hard worker," and a person who enjoyed socializing with family and friends.

Family members who mourn his passing include his wife, Susan; daughters, Nadyne (James Walker) Zimmerman, Nicki (Richard) Zimmerman-Manero, Heidi (Paul) Johnston, Megan, Michael and Michelle Zimmerman. Grandchildren include Staci (Joby) Wuestewald, Shelby, Shandra and Samuel Hanson, Bailey Zimmerman and Keegan Johnston, Keirnan Zimmerman; and Grandpup, Delaney. Sam has three great-grandchildren, Jordon, Jaxson and Josie Wuestewald. Included are his siblings, Deloit (Janet) Zimmerman and Curtis (Jane) Zimmerman; brother-in-law, Ron Honkomp; and several nieces and nephews.

Wayland was preceded in death by his parents, Roy and Wilma Zimmerman; a sister, Beth Honkomp; and Grandpup, Dakota.

The Zimmerman family wishes to thank the doctors and nurses of Unity Point Health Hospital, the staff at Prime Assisted Living, the staff at Recovery Health, and the staff at Waterbury Funeral Service.
