Darlene D. Milbrodt, 82, of Sioux City, passed away in her sleep Saturday, Aug. 19, 2017, at Pioneer Valley Living and Rehabilitation Center, where she had happily resided since March 2017.

Memorial services will be 11 a.m. Friday at St. Paul's Lutheran Church. Visitation will be 5 to 8 p.m. Thursday, with family present 6 to 8 p.m. and a prayer service at 7 p.m., at Meyer Brothers Colonial Chapel. Online condolences may be directed to www.meyerbroschapels.com.

Darlene was born on Sept. 27, 1934, in Cherokee, Iowa, the daughter of Otto and Hattie (Hoeppner) Olson and the youngest of 16 siblings. She was raised and educated in Cherokee.

On Oct. 7, 1955, she married Robert Milbrodt, and in 1956 they were blessed with the birth of their daughter , Marcia, their only child. The family moved to Sioux City in 1958 and she had lived and worked here since that time. Darlene and Robert later divorced, but had remained as friends since that time. Bob had been very supportive over the years as her health declined.

Darlene was known for being a wonderful caretaker, and she worked nearly all of her years as a nurse's aide. Initially at a local retirement home, she later worked for many years as a home health aide for Amicare Home Health in Sioux City. Following this, she did independent in-home care for the elderly and disabled until her retirement.

She was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran faith in Cherokee and had been a member of St. Paul's Lutheran Church since moving to Sioux City in 1958. Her interests include her family and friends, especially her grandchildren, and was known to be very fond of rummage sales. She enjoyed connecting with others, and could elicit the full life history of just about everyone she met in very short order. Always in a good mood, she was known for her infectious laugh and always had something nice to say to everyone she met.

Left to cherish her memory are her daughter, Marcia Shook and son-in-law, Steven Shook of Sioux City; grandchildren, Lauren Scherer (Matt) of Charleston, S.C., Erin (Brandon) Coakley of Charleston, and Nolan Shook of Sioux City; four great-grandchildren, Lainey and Sonny Scherer, and Banks and Ella Coakley, also of Charleston; brothers, Francis (Pat) Olson and Virgil Olson; and sisters, Anita Nelson and Evelyn Scott.

Darlene was preceded in death by her parents, Otto and Hattie Olson; five brothers, Leonard, William, Donald, Merlyn, and Harold Olson; and six sisters, Viola Brownmiller, Clara Williams, Luella Cipperly, Margaret Patris, and two sisters in infancy.

The family would like to extend their special thanks to Pioneer Valley Living and Rehab Center and to Hospice of Siouxland for their kind and wonderful care.

Memorials may be directed to St. Paul's Lutheran School, 612 Jennings St., Sioux City, IA 51101.
