Jerry E. Wheeler, 73, of Sioux City passed away Friday, Nov. 17, 2006, at a Sioux City hospital.

Services will be 1 p.m. Monday at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, with the Rev. Craig Collison officiating. Entombment will be in Calvary Cemetery Mausoleum. Visitation will be 4:30 to 8 p.m. today, with the family present 6 to 8 p.m. and a prayer service at 7 p.m., at the church. Arrangements are under the direction of Christy-Smith Berkemier Chapel.

Jerry was born Oct. 27, 1933, in Ainsworth, Neb., the son of Alvin S. and Clarice Wheeler. He served in the U.S. Navy for four years and was also a veteran of the U.S.S. Iowa.

He was united in marriage to Jane M. Corkery on Aug. 10, 1955, in Wadena, Iowa. He had resided in Sioux City the past 65 years. Jerry was employed at MidAmerican Energy for more than 39 years as a coal supervisor.

He was a very active member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church, serving as an usher and a member of Sacred Heart Knights of Columbus Council No. 11392, among many other duties. He also served on the school board, finance board, drove the school bus and coached the football team with Brother Dan. His most important and active role was serving as a dad, grandpa and great-grandpa.

Survivors include his wife, Jane Wheeler of Sioux City; three daughters, Julie and her husband, Brian Sands of Sioux City, Jolene Mozak of North Sioux City and Jessica and her husband, Jeff Taylor of Sioux City; a son, Jeffrey and his wife, Sheila Wheeler of Sioux City; seven grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and a half -sister, Letoy Smith of Wisconsin.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Alvin and Clarice Wheeler; two brothers, James and Donald Ensley; and his father, Roy Ensley.
