Wilmar L. Nelson, 79, of Sioux City died Monday, Nov. 20, 2006, at Charlier Hospice Center in Evansville, Ind.

Services will be at a later date. Arrangements are under the direction of Ziemer Funeral Home East Chapel in Evansville. Condolences may be sent online to www.ziemerfuneralhome.com.

Wilmar was born Jan. 1, 1927, in Wakonda, S.D., the son of Lewis and Elsie (Hall) Nelson. He retired March 15, 1990 as a land surveyor with the Department of Transportation for the State of Iowa.

He was a member of Morningside Lutheran Church, where he was a Prayer Warrior and choir member for many years. He was involved with the Scandinavian Society and the Nordic Male Chorus and was a friend of Bill W. for 26 years. In his retirement, his true joy was singing, especially in kitchen bands when and where he could. The couple had spent 16 years wintering in Weslaco, Texas.

Survivors include his wife, Evelyn J. (Skaane) Nelson of Sioux City; a son and his wife, Jerry and Julie Nelson of Gilbert, Ariz.; a daughter and her husband, Cinda and Tom Sanderson of Evansville, Ind.; grandchildren, Melida Heien, Merideth Sanderson, Elizabeth "Bissy" Sanderson, Kristen (Nelson) Huff and Anne Nelson; a great-grandchild, Austin Hiam; a sister, Wilma (Nelson) Sorensen of Yankton, S.D.; and a sister-in-law, Lynette Nelson.

He was preceded in death by his parents; and two brothers, Donald and Dean Nelson.
