Bernice A. Swenson, 84, of Sioux City died Saturday, Nov. 18, 2006, at Countryside Senior Living following a lengthy battle with cancer.

Services will be 3 p.m. Wednesday at St. Luke Evangelical Lutheran Church, with the Rev. Craig Bock officiating. Burial will be in Graceland Park Cemetery. Visitation will be 3 to 8 p.m. today at Meyer Brothers Morningside Chapel. Condolences may be sent online to www.meyerbroschapels.com.

Mrs. Swenson was born Jan. 17, 1922, in Sioux City, the daughter of Gust and Selma (Anderson) Peterson. She graduated from Central High School in 1938.

She married Harold O. Swenson on Sept. 5, 1942, in Sioux City. He died Jan. 23, 1982, in Sioux City. They lived in Rapid City, S.D., Kansas City, Kan., and Madison, Wis., for 12 years, returning to Sioux City in 1964. She worked for J.C. Penney's in the auditing department for 25 years, retiring in 1990.

She enjoyed playing bridge and reading. She was an active member of St. Luke Lutheran Church, where she sang in the choir for many years. She also was the Women of the Church and Mary Circle. She also belonged to the Morningside Golden Years Club.

Survivors include three sons and their wives, Oren and Sue Swenson of Shawnee, Okla., Mark and Lois Swenson of Sioux City and Paul and Sue Swenson of Norman, Okla.; six grandchildren, Crystl, Kari, Michael, Jennifer, Kelli and Alison; three great-grandchildren; and a sister, Helen Reuschling of Sacramento, Calif.

She was preceded in death by her parents; and a brother, Edwin.

Memorials may be directed to St. Luke Lutheran Church or Hospice of Siouxland.
