Perry M. Petersen, 83, of Sergeant Bluff, died Friday, June 23, 2017.

Memorial Service will be 11 a.m. Friday at Morningside Lutheran Church in Sioux City. Burial will be in Hayfield, Minn. at a later date. Visitation will be 10 a.m. until service time Friday at the church. Arrangements are under the direction of Waterbury Funeral Service of Sergeant Bluff.

Perry Marvin Petersen was born on Oct. 29, 1933, in Bancroft, Iowa, the son of Jens and Ella (Saxton) Petersen. When Perry was a young boy, they moved to Hayfield, where he graduated from Hayfield High School. He joined the U.S. Army in 1951.

Perry married Jean L. Byaastad on Dec. 29, 1954. He was honorably discharged in 1954. They made their home in Ames, Iowa, where Perry continued his education at Iowa State and received his bachelor's degree in agriculture. Over the years, Perry worked as an agronomist that took him and his family all over the Midwest. Perry and Jean moved to Sergeant Bluff in 1989 to work for Terra Industries until his retirement. After his retirement, he did consultant work in the United States and Russia. Jean passed away in May 2012.

Perry was a member of Morningside Lutheran Church and active with the Lutheran Congregations in Mission for Christ.

He is survived by his two daughters, Patricia Johnson of Bremen, Ga., and Lisa (Gene) Lechtenberg of Spencer, Neb., two sons, Todd (Rina) Petersen of Forest Park Ill., and Tim (Janet) Petersen of Seattle, Wash.; eight grandchildren, Rachel, Sarah, Kelli, Eric, Ella, Samuel, Helena, and Melat; three great-grandchildren; one sister, Ardys (Henry) Bartel of Rochester, Minn.; and his special companion, Linda L. Schmidt of Sioux City.

Perry was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Jean; a one son-in-law, Marvin Johnson; and a brother, Errol.

In lieu of flowers, gifts may be to Iowa State Foundation College of Agriculture and Life Sciences or can be sent to Morningside Lutheran Church.
