Viola T. “Dode” Marksbury, 90, of Spirit Lake, Iowa, formerly of Sioux City, passed away Wednesday, June 14, 2017.

Services will be 10 a.m. Monday at St. Boniface Catholic Church. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery. Visitation will be 4 to 7 p.m. today, with the family present 5 to 7 p.m., and a vigil service at 7 p.m., at Meyer Brothers Colonial Chapel. Viola was born Sept. 10, 1926, in Mapleton, Iowa, to Joseph and Pearl (Altmanshofer) Uhl. She grew up in Mapleton, and graduated from Mapleton High School where she played basketball.

Following graduation, she moved to Chicago and worked as a telegraph operator during World War II. She returned to Sioux City, where she met her future husband, James A. Marksbury while working as an usherette at the Orpheum Theater. They were married on April 30, 1949. Together they raised two children.

Dode worked as an office manager at Boyer’s Provisions. After their retirement, the couple moved to Spirit Lake. Jim passed away Feb. 22, 1987, in Spring, Texas. She later married Alfred Steiner, and he passed away Feb. 15, 2015.

While living in Spirit Lake, she was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church and a member of St. Boniface Catholic while in Sioux City. She was a volunteer at the Dickinson County Hospital and was involved with the Pearson Lakes Art Center, the Dickinson Co. Nature Center and belonged to a garden club. She enjoyed golfing and traveling. Her favorite trip was to Rome, where she received Holy Communion from the Pope on Christmas Eve.

Survivors include her son, Robert (Lynette) Marksbury of Spirit Lake; a daughter, Rise (Frank) Tracy of Sioux City; grandchildren, James (Alysia) Marksbury, Joseph Marksbury, Gregory (Malisha) Tracy and Malinda (Corey) Mehlhaff; eight great-grandchildren and another on the way; two siblings, Ronald Uhl and Lourine Kluver, both of Mapleton, Iowa; and nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; both husbands; and siblings, Cecelia Flammang, Rita Fitzpatrick, Wilma Jean Stanton, Bernice Kuhlman, Delbert Uhl and Donald Uhl.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made in her name to the Alzheimer’s Association of Siouxland.
