Joyce L. Corrie of Anthon, passed away Friday, Aug. 4, 2017, at Correctionville (Iowa) Specialty Care Center.

A celebration of life service will be 11 a.m. Friday, with family present at 10 a.m., at Anthon United Methodist Church. Arrangements are under the direction of Becker-Hunt Funeral Home in South Sioux City.

Joyce Louise Hegstrom was born on June 2, 1927, in rural Lawton, Iowa, the daughter of Jay L. and Anne M. (Bierma) Hegstrom. She graduated with the class of 1944 at Lawton High School and then attended Buena Vista College for two years. She taught in Coon Rapids, Iowa for two years.

On Sept. 12, 1948, she married the love of her life, Wallace Corrie in Lawton. The couple farmed west of Anthon and raised their family there. She continued her education at Morningside College, earning her degree and taught in Climbing Hill, Iowa for one year and then in Anthon, giving many kindergarten children a wonderful start in their education. She married Pat Phillips in 1977.

She was active in her community, promoting bingo, and enjoying golf and cards especially bridge. She supported her church and the American Legion and was a Legion Auxiliary member of more than 75 years, holding every office. She was a member of Eastern Star for 50 years and achieved Worthy Matron. She was a supporter of the political process, having her picture taken many times with George W. Bush were proud moments for her.

Joyce is survived by her children, Doug Corrie of South Sioux City, Robert (Ellen) Corrie of Fairfax Station, Va., Steve (Lynn "Bitsy") Corrie of Sioux City, and Cindy (Matt) Curtin of Anthon; six grandchildren, Brad (Natasha) Curtin, Michelle (Andy) Ford, Jeff (Amanda) Curtin, Amanda (Rob) Parish, Judson Corrie and Liz Corrie; and five great-grandchildren, Allison and Nate Ford, Ella and Jordynn Curtin and Ruth Parish.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Wallace in 1972; a son, Thomas (Coz); a grandson, Michael; her brother, Gene; sister-in-law, Olive; a sister, Roberta; and brother-in-law, Wencil.

In memory of her, we ask that you donate to the Anthon Community Center, one of Joyce's years long crusades to save.
