Esther Wieland Messenger, 73, of Sioux City died Saturday, September 7, 1996, at a Sioux City hospital following a lengthy illness.

Services will be 2 p.m. today at the Larkin Northside Funeral Home, 2320 Outer Drive North, with Spiritual Leader James Sherman of Congregation Beth Shalom officiating. Burial will be in Logan Park Cemetery. Visitation will continue today from 10 a.m. until service time.

Mrs. Messenger, the former Esther Katzman, was born November 4, 1922, in Fort Dodge, Iowa, the daughter of Sam and Rose Katzman, She grew up in Cherokee, Iowa and graduated from Cherokee High School. She attended N.B.T. Business College in Sioux City, where she moved with her family in 1964. She married Benny Wieland on February 14, 1941 in Omaha, Nebraska. He died June 12, 1969, in Sioux City. She married Lee R. Messenger on October 20, 1973 in Sioux City. Mrs. Messenger worked as an accountant and bookkeeper for the National Auto Parts Store in Cherokee and then worked in Sioux City for Wells Fargo, Kalin’s Fur Fashions, and as office manager for Grandy Pratt Insurance Co., retiring in 1984.

Mrs. Messenger was a member of Congregation Beth Shalom Synagogue.

Survivors include her husband Lee; her children, Brad and his wife Patty Wieland of Wayne, Nebraska, Michele Wieland of Kansas City, Mo., Janeene and Thomas Messenger of Leawood, Kansas, Ralph and his wife Carol Messenger of Edmond, Okla., Jean and her husband Craig Broyhill of Dakota City, Jackie and her husband Jim Norris of Springfield, Illinois, Jane Ann and her husband Mark Prather of Fargo, N.D., Mary and her husband Phil Netley of Palm Desert, California and John and his wife Linda Messenger of Grayslake, Illinois; two brothers ad their wives, Abe ad Esther Katzman of Toledo, Ohio and Louis and Grace Katzman of Cherokee, Iowa; a sister and her husband, Anne and Arnold Goldberg of Minneapolis, Minn., a sister-in-law, Joan Barnes of Rolla, Mo.; 28 grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

Pallbearers will be her grandchildren.

Memorials may be given in her name to Congregation Beth Shalom Synagogue or Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church.
