Marjorie Woodson Howe, 81, a former Sioux City resident, died Sunday, November 3, 1996 at the University Hospital in Omaha.

Graveside services will be held at Cave Hill Cemetery in Louisville, Kentucky.

Mrs. Howe was born March 23, 1915 in Dayton, Ohio, the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. J.S. Woodson. Mr. Woodson was associate editor of The Journal from 1921 until his retirement in 1960.

Mrs. Howe was the music and drama critic for The Journal for four years. She edited five books and had several articles published in national magazines. At the time of her death, she was writing a history of the Woodson family, tracing it back to Mary, queen of Scots, of whom she was a tenth-generation direct descendant.

In 1962, she was chairman of the All-American City committee, which won a national award for Sioux City.

She started the Great Books reading and discussion program here, and was coordinator of the project in Iowa, Nebraska and South Dakota for 11 years. In 1961, she organized a group, which later became the Mayor’s Committee for International Visitors.

Mrs. Howe initiated the circulating record collection at the Sioux City Public Library as a Junior League project. After two years of working as a volunteer, she became a library staff member, as head of the Concert-Room and also director of public relations.

Mrs. Howe was formerly vice president of the Junior League of Sioux City and an officer of the Adult Education Council. She served several terms as a board member of the Sioux City Arts Center, was a member of Travelers Club, St. Thomas Episcopal Church and the Sioux City Country Club.

Mrs. Howe graduated from Central High School in 1932, attended Morningside College for one year and the State University of Iowa for two years, where she was president of Kappa Kappa Gamma sorority.

She married Robert Blanchard Howe, September 8, 1934, in Blair, Nebraska. Mr. Howe who was vice president of IBP International, died in 1975.

Mrs. Howe had been living in Omaha since October 1987.

Survivors include one son, G. Woodson Howe of Omaha; a daughter, Mariette Bell of Denver and two grandchildren.
