SIOUX CITY | Gary Winters, 78, of Sioux City, passed away Friday, March 31, 2017, at a Sioux City hospital.

Services will be 10:30 a.m. Friday at Church of the Nativity of Our Lord Jesus Christ. Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery. Visitation will be 5 to 7 p.m. Thursday, with a vigil service at 6:30 p.m., at Meyer Brothers Morningside Chapel. Online condolences may be given at www.meyerbroschapels.com.

Gary B., the son of Ben and Anna (Ulven) Winters, was born on April 14, 1938, in Jefferson, S.D. He grew up in Jefferson and attended school through the ninth grade.

On Nov. 29, 1958, Gary was united in marriage with Mary Brown in Sioux City. Three children were born to this marriage. Gary was employed for 42 years by the Sioux City School District. He first worked as a carpenter, glazer, and then plumber. For the last 27 years of his career with the school district, he served as the director of transportation, and retired with the additional title of assistant of director of operations and maintenance.

Gary was a member of Church of the Nativity of Our Lord Jesus Christ, and was former president of the Hawkeye Brittany Club. He liked to golf, hunt, fish, and cheer on the Iowa Hawkeyes. Gary was an accomplished handyman. He enjoyed working in his shop, restoring old cars, and renovating his children's homes. He loved and was very proud of his children and grandchildren.

Gary is survived by his wife, Mary Winters of Sioux City; three children, Julie Mitchell and husband, Kevin of Mesa, Ariz., Douglas Winters and wife, Melissa of Sloan, Iowa, and Mary E. Lamaak and husband, Gary of Collinsville, Okla.; seven grandchildren, Sarah, Kelly, Benjamin, Blayten, Rylee, Robin and Casey; and three sisters, Nancy Van Meter, Dorothy Stewart and husband, Dave, and Maxine Sherrard.

He was preceded in death by his parents; and four sisters, Bonnie Bouck, Vivian Andersen, Delores Martinez and Opal Brewer.
