SIOUX CITY | Julia M. Tipler of Omaha, formerly of Sioux City, on March 19, 2017, the feast of St. Joseph, passed peacefully at the Gretna (Neb.) Community Living Center, surrounded by her daughter, son and their spouses.

Services will be 6 p.m. Thursday, May 11, at St Gerald Catholic Church, 96th and Q Street, in Ralston, Neb. Graveside services will be 11:30 a.m. Friday, May 12, in Calvary Cemetery, Sioux City. Visitation with the family will be 4 to 5:30 p.m. Thursday, May 11, with a rosary at 5:30 p.m., all at the church.

Julia was born in Cottonwood, Minn., to Eva (Longtin) and Frank Hirmer. She married Jerrold C. Tipler on June 2, 1941 in Marshall, Minn. They shared 53 wonderful years. In 1948, they moved from Marshall to Sioux City. Jerrold died in 1994 and in 2007, Julia moved to Omaha to be closer to family.

Julia was an active post-war wife and mother who filled her life volunteering for church and school activities, working at the Catholic Bargain Center and serving as a board member. She was active in youth programs, sewing for her children and grandchildren, cooking the family's favorites, gardening, golfing, traveling and attending her kids' and grandkids' activities and sporting events.

Julia's family describes her as a lady full of grace, and a true prayer warrior. Grandchildren who spent the night at her home, recalled awaking in the morning to find her at the kitchen table praying from her prayer books and prayer cards. A rosary was always tucked under her bed pillow or found on her nightstand. She had a quiet confidence about life, living simply and happily, loving God and her family. She possessed a servant's heart. She enjoyed very much welcoming and hosting family, neighbors, and friends in her home. Her heart and home were places of refuge and healing. She taught and witnessed to many the beauty of approaching death with dignity.

Julia and Jerry had daughter, Linda (Jary) Lester, and grandchildren, Laura (Tim Newman) Lester, Susan (Brad) Hall, Julee (Damon) Colyer, Christina (Tyler) Koser, and Dennis Lester; son, Jerry (Patty) Tipler, and grandchildren, Luke (Kristen) Tipler and Eric (Shirley) Tipler; 12 great-grandchildren; and four great-great-grandchildren.

Julia was preceded in death by her two brothers, John and Frank Hirmer, and their wives.

She is fondly remembered for saying, "I love you with my whole heart, I do" followed by her signature wink of an eye. In remembrance of Julia, her family requests that you say a prayer for someone, perform a loving act of kindness, and tell others you love them with your whole heart. Wink.
