SIOUX CITY | Gerald L. Prewitt, 91, of Sioux City, passed away Tuesday, Feb. 14, 2017, at his residence.

Services will be 10 a.m. Saturday at Riverside Lutheran Church, with the Rev. Tim Squier officiating. Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery, with military rites presented by the American Legion Oleson-Halweg Post 125 of Merrill, Iowa. Visitation will be 5 to 8 p.m. today, with a prayer service at 7 p.m., at the church. Arrangements are under the direction of Meyer Brothers Colonial Chapel. Gerald was born on Jan. 16, 1926, in Hawarden, Iowa, the son of Ward and Amy (Johnson) Prewitt. He enlisted in the U.S. Army on March 29, 1944 and served during World War II in the Pacific Theatre at Okinawa, Japan in the heavy artillery unit. He was honorably discharged on April 13, 1946.

After his military service, Gerald worked at Sioux City Battery, where he met his wife, LaVonne Church. The couple was married on Nov. 1, 1946 in Sioux City. She preceded him in death on Sept. 4, 1992. Gerald married Frances Connick on May 15, 1994 in Fremont, Neb. Gerald worked for Ralston Purina for 36 years before retiring on Aug. 1, 1994. "JP" loved his coworkers and attended the Purina Christmas Party for a total of 59 years.

Jerry loved to fish, camp, and bowl, but his greatest love was for his garden. He often shared his many plants with friends and family. He was a member of the American Legion Oleson-Halweg Post 125 in Merrill for 25 years.

Survivors include his wife, Frances Prewitt of Sioux City; children, Dennis (Patti) Prewitt of Heber, Ariz., Doug (Edie) Prewitt of Merrill, and Deb (Dale) Kroeger of Merrill; daughter-in-law, Lesley Prewitt of Aurora, Colo.; stepchildren, Jim (Kathy) Connick of Minburn, Iowa, Ron (Diane) Connick of Sutherland, Neb., Terry Connick of Doniphan, Neb., Jeff (Gloria) Connick of Sioux City, and Carolyn Connick of Arlington, Neb.; grandchildren, Dennis (Terri) Engdhal, Aaron (Cindy) Prewitt, Tiffany (Leo) Brennan, Jess (Tony) Emerson, Courtney Clark, Nick Kroeger, Taylor Prewitt (Paul School), and Jenna Prewitt (fiance, George Neuberger); 15 great-grandchildren; 13 stepgrandchildren and spouses; 36 great-stepgrandchildren; two great-great-stepgrandchildren; siblings, Richard (Loretta) Prewitt of Seattle, Wash., Evelyn Farnsworth of Rochester, N.Y., Jane Byus of Indianapolis, Ind., and Candace (Steve) Bruhn of Iowa City, Iowa; brother-in-law, Paul (Sharon) Calkins of Des Moines; sister-in-law, Pat Prewitt of Peoria, Ariz.; sister-in-law, Toni Prewitt of Troy, Mo.; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Gerald was preceded in death by his parents; wife, LaVonne; son, David Prewitt; stepson, Kenneth Connick; mother-in-law, Alice Calkins; and his brothers, Dennis David, Don, and Vernon.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given to the family to be donated to local veteran's programs.
