SIOUX CITY | Wayne Masters, 89, of Sioux City, died Tuesday, Feb. 21, 2017, at Sunrise Retirement Community in Sioux City.

A celebration of life service will be 11 a.m. Saturday at St. James United Methodist, 2032 South Cypress St., in Sioux City, with the Rev. Eric Sayonkon officiating. Private family interment will be in Memorial Park Cemetery. Arrangements are under the direction of Morningside Chapel, Christy-Smith Funeral Home. Wayne was born on Wednesday, May 18, 1927, in Emmett County, Iowa, to Fred and Trena (Christensen) Masters. He grew up on the family farm and attended school in Graettinger, graduating in 1945 from Graettinger High School. He entered into the U.S. Army on Sept. 15, 1945 and was trained as a surgical tech. He was honorably discharged on Nov. 14, 1946. He returned home to Iowa and attended Drake University, graduating in 1950.

While at Drake, he met Dorothy Mae Bailey and the two were married on Sept. 4, 1949 in Shenandoah, Iowa. After they graduated from Drake, the couple moved to Sioux City and later became the owners of Cecelia Park Drug. The couple had two children, Steve and Rick. They owned and operated the store for 30 years until they decided to close it in 1982. Wayne later worked for Greenville Pharmacy, K-Mart Pharmacy and Drilling Pharmacy. He was a registered pharmacist in the state of Iowa for 50 years.

His hobbies included being an avid Hawkeye fan, fishing, golfing, and spending time with family.

Wayne was a member of Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) for 50 years, and recently a member of St. James United Methodist Church. He also was a member of the Iowa Pharmaceutical Association, American Legion Monahan-Nelson Post 64 in Sioux City, Morningside Rose Croix Chapter 502 Order of the Eastern Star, a 50-year member of both the Morningside Masonic Lodge 615 AF and AM, and the Sioux City Scottish Rite.

Surviving are his wife, Dorothy of Sioux City; sons, Steve (Twyla) of Minneapolis, and Richard (MeeWha) of New York City; and grandson, Dr. HyungSub Shim of Iowa City, Iowa.

He was preceded in death by his grandson, Alan Wayne Masters.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorials be sent to St. James United Methodist Church, Sunrise Retirement Community, or Vision Project Grand Chapter of Iowa Order of the Eastern Star.
