Richard "Dick" Fetterman, 81, of West Des Moines, Iowa, formerly of Sioux City, entered his eternal life on Thursday, Feb. 23, 2006, at Kavanagh House on Grand in West Des Moines.

Services will be 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, 1627 Grand Ave., West Des Moines. Burial will be in Resthaven Cemetery, West Des Moines, with military rites conducted. Arrangements are under the direction of Brooks Funeral Care, 7975 University Boulevard, Clive, Iowa.

Richard "Dick" Fetterman was born on Feb. 3, 1925, in Sioux City, to Mable and William Fetterman. He had lived in Moultrie, Ga., Marshalltown, Iowa, and had moved to West Des Moines in 1994. Immediately following graduation from high school, he volunteered for service with the U.S. Navy. During World War II, he served aboard the USS Nehenta Bay. He received medal recognition for his service in the American and Asiatic-Pacific Campaigns. He was a superintendent with the Swift Company until his retirement in 1987.

He was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church. He enjoyed yearly reunions with his shipmates. Dick was an avid golfer who carried a great love for the game throughout his life. Above all things, he enjoyed peaceful time in prayer and being with his family. A beloved husband, father and grandfather, he will be remember for his willingness to sacrifice for others.

He will be missed by his wife, Elisabeth "Bette" Fetterman, whom he married on June 23, 1953; sons, Richard (Donna) Fetterman of Moultrie, Ga., and Gregory (Rachel) Fetterman of Lincoln, Neb.; daughters, Joan (Mike) McGovern of Bothel, Wash., and Susan (Alan) Druckemiller of Des Moines, Iowa; and his grandchildren, Christopher and Ann Fetterman, Michael, Andrew and Thomas McGovern and Scott, Kate, Theresa and Matthew Fetterman.

He was preceded in death by his parents, a sister and a brother.

Memorials may be made to Seminarian Education Fund or Sacred Heart Catholic School Scholarship Fund.
