SIOUX CITY | Abraham (Abe) Polaykoff, 92, of Sioux City, died Thursday, Jan. 12, 2017, at a local care facility.

Family graveside services were held Sunday at Independent Farane Cemetery, with Rabbi Guy Green officiating. Arrangements were under the direction of Meyer Brothers Colonial Chapel.

Abe was born Feb. 22, 1924, in Sioux City, the son of Max and Masha (Silver) Polaykoff. He graduated from Central High School in 1942.

He enlisted in the Army Air Force in 1942 and after graduating from The Army Administration School, he served three years with the Eighth Air Force in England. After the war ended, he attended the University of Iowa. Three years later, his father died, and Abe and brother Ben, who also enlisted in the Army after graduating from Central High School and was attending Morningside College, left school and became partners with their mother, Masha, in Polaykoff’s Food Market on 10th and Court streets. After Masha retired, Abe and Ben continued as partners for a total of 43 years. In the fall of 1991, they sold the store and retired.

Finding he only needed 24 upper-level hours to graduate, Abe continued taking correspondence and Tele Courses and after being a “senior” for 45 years, finally earned his Bachelor of Liberal Studies degree in 1993 at the age of 69 from the University of Iowa. Abe was very proud of this accomplishment in his life.

Abe’s retirement hobbies included writing short stories and continuing his studies in Geology, Astronomy, and Anthropology.

Survivors include his niece, Barbara McCuddin and her husband, Kent; his niece, Karen Herzoff; his nephew, Michael Herzoff and his wife, Priscilla; his niece, Cindy Dishlip; his niece, Marci Beman; his sister-in-law, Etta Polaykoff; and several great nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his father, Max Polaykoff; his mother, Masha Polaykoff; his brother, Ben Polaykoff; his sister, Sarah Herzoff; and his aunt, Anna Silver.
