Stanistaw "Stanley" Grondek, 83, of Sioux City died Friday, Sept. 2, 2005, at Morningside Nursing & Rehab Center following a two-month illness with cancer.

Services will be 1 p.m. Wednesday at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, with the Rev. Daniel C. Guenther officiating. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery. Visitation will be 1 to 9 p.m. Tuesday, with a rosary recited at 4 p.m. by the Catholic Daughters of America and a parish vigil service at 7 p.m., at Larkin Morningside Funeral home.

Stanley was born on May 15, 1922, in Rudzianek, Poland, the son of Antoni and Julianna (Skowronska) Grondek. He came to the U.S. in 1949 and lived in Stanton and Randolph, Neb.

He married Aniela "Nellie" Grochowska on Nov. 26, 1946, in Darmstadt, Germany. The couple moved to Sioux City in 1951. They lived in Texas for three years before returning to Sioux City. Mr. Grondek worked for the Chicago Northwestern Railroad from 1950 to 1954. In 1954 he went to work for Armour Packing Co. as a meat cutter. In 1966, he worked for Floyd Valley Packing Co. and then Sioux Quality Packing Co. until 1978, at which time he went back to work for Armour Packing Co. in Worthington, Minn. He retired in 1983.

He was a former member of St. Francis Church, where he was active as an usher and money counter. He also volunteered to work on funeral dinners and parish dinners. He was a former member of the Pulaski Club and also belonged to the Amalgamated Meat Cutters Union. Stanley enjoyed playing cards, taking walks and working in his garden. He enjoyed spending time with his wife, sons and grandchildren. He was also able to visit Poland three times to see family in 1968, 1978 and 1985.

Survivors include his wife, Nellie Grondek of Sioux City; two sons, Roman Grondek and his wife, Cathy of Omaha, Neb., and Richard Grondek and his wife, Mary Jane of Council Bluffs, Iowa; seven grandchildren, Jody Grondek, Joel Grondek, Elizabeth Grondek, Allison Grondek, Laura Andrie-Grondek, Andrew Grondek and Austin Andrie-Grondek; a great-granddaughter, McKenzie Locke; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; three brothers, Jan, Tony and Henri Grondek; and three sisters, Josephine Grondek, Mary Maka and Alexandra Koniach.

Pallbearers will be Chester Jablonski, Walt Zyzda, Lucian Bratkiewicz, Richard Bratkiewicz, Austin Andrie-Grondek and Andrew Grondek.

Memorials in his name may be directed to Hospice of Siouxland and the American Lung Association.
