Donald L. Clay, 68, of West Covina, Calif., formerly of Sioux City, died Thursday, Aug. 25, 2005, at Citrus Valley Hospice in West Covina following a courageous four-month battle with cancer.

Donald was born Nov. 4, 1936, in Sioux City, to Frank V. Clay Sr. and Effie (Halverson) Clay. He attended Sioux City Public Schools and graduated from Central High School in 1955. He served in the U.S. Air Force from 1955 to 1959. After his military service, he returned to Sioux City before moving to California in 1960.

He married Viola Mae Pettit on May 12, 1973, in Las Vegas, Nev. Viola died May 31, 2004.

He was employed with the Los Angeles Times newspaper from 1964 until his retirement in 1994.

He is survived by four brothers and their wives, Frank V. Jr. and Dorothy Clay of Bullhead City, Ariz., Vernon and Chris Clay of Kingman, Ariz., Richard and Marlene Clay of Alta, Iowa, and Norman and Corrine Clay of Sioux City; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a sister, Betty Jean Clay; and a brother, William H. Clay.
