Services held for former owner of Mapleton Auction Co.

Gary R Caskey, age 59 of Correctionville, Iowa, died Sunday, August 21, 2005 in Sioux City, Iowa.

Memorial services were held 10:30 a.m. Thursday. August 25 at Grace United Methodist Church in Correctionville with Pastor Sheryl Ashley officiating Burial was in the Correctionville Cemetery. Bruce Mathers was the vocalist and accompanist for the service and music was "In The Garden", "Go Rest High On That Mountain" and "Angels Among Us". The congregation sang, "Precious Lord Take My Hand". A prayer service was held at 70 0 p m Wednesday at the Armstrong Funeral Home in Anthon with Pastor Sheryl Ashley officiating, followed by Mr. Keith Byers .

Gary Ray Caskey was born July 10, 1946 in Cushing, Iowa. He was the son of Gerald "Perk" and Lucille Perkins, and the older brother to Sharon and Shirley.

Gary grew up in Correctionville and Pierson, and attended school in both towns. Following high school, Gary completed Sioux City Barber School. He worked as a barber in a shop in the Sioux City Stockyards, and also drove a gravel truck before becoming self-employed in a variety of ventures. He was a cattle and hog buyer, as well as raising cattle and hogs He was a self-taught auctioneer, and conducted sales throughout Northwest Iowa He participated in a national competition for auctioneers in the 1990's. Gary opened and operated several businesses in the area, including the Longhorn Bar in Correctionville Mapleton Auction Company in Mapleton, Valley Treasures Antiques, Caskey Auto Sales, and Club Cosmo in Correctionville He was also Mayor of Pierson, Iowa for several years.

Gary has been married to Mary (Groszkrueger) Caskey since November 1982 The couple renewed their wedding vows in November of 1999 at Grace United Methodist Church in Correctionville, where he was a member.

He enjoyed traveling, especially trips to Las Vegas, fishing and was an avid fan of movies and television He was blessed with the gift of gab, and could enchant an entire room of people with his jokes and comments whether he was calling an auction or just entertaining friends.

Gary is survived by his wife, Mary, daughter Sheila (Deon) Carter of St Paul, Minnesota , grandchildren Lindsey, Brandon, Brendon. and Blake Gary Carter of St Paul, Minnesota , stepson Todd Peters, of Pierson, Iowa, step-daughter Trina Peters (Chad) Cameron of Texas, a n d great-granddaughter Samanth a Schmidt of St Paul, Minnesota, two sisters. Sharon (Steve) Hunwardsen and Shirley (Doug) Thompson, and his parents, Gerald and Lucille Perkins, all of Correctionville Gary will also be missed by numerous nieces and nephews, cousins, aunts and uncles, and friends.

He was preceded in death by his grandparents, Orville and Vinnie Foster and a step-brother, Doug Perkins.

Arrangements were made under the direction of the Armstrong Funeral Home of Anthon.
