Howard Walter Warren Jr., 84, of Sioux City died Thursday, Dec. 6, 2007, at a Sioux City hospital.

Services will be 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at St. Mark Lutheran Church, with the Rev. John Hagberg officiating. Burial will be in Graceland Park Cemetery. Visitation will be 4 to 8 p.m. today, with the family present 6 to 8 p.m. and a Masonic service at 7 p.m., at Christy-Smith Morningside Chapel. Howard was born Nov. 17, 1923, to Howard W. and Meta Helen (Schildman) Warren in LaCrosse, Wis. He grew up and attended LaCrosse Public Schools, graduating from LaCrosse Logan High School. Howard started working for the CB&Q Railroad while still in high school. In 1942, he enlisted in the U.S. Army Air Corps and served during World War II. He returned to LaCrosse after serving his country.

Howard went to work for the U.S. Weather Bureau in 1945 at LaCrosse, where he met Betty Schaeffer. The two were united in marriage on April 27, 1946. The couple made LaCrosse their home and had three children, Gary, John and Richard.

In 1964, they moved the family to Sioux City, where Howard worked for the Sioux City Weather Bureau until his retirement in 1979. He later worked for Sears for five years, retiring again in 1984.

Howard was a loving husband, father and grandfather. He lived each day to its fullest and never let anything keep him down. He was an aggressive man and never missed an opportunity to tell his family how much he loved them. Howard was a friend to all and always eager to lend a hand.

He was an active member of St. Mark Lutheran Church and its men's group. He was also a member of the Landmark Masonic Lodge 103, Sioux City Consistory, Sioux City Amateur Radio Club, Disabled American Veterans (D.A.V.) and Morningside Kiwanis Club. His hobbies included golfing, being a ham radio operator (his call sign was NOWWX), visiting and having coffee with his friends.

Survivors include his wife, Betty Warren; three sons and their wives, Gary and Barb Warren of Sioux City, John and Mary Warren of Lee's Summit, Mo., and Richard and Susan Warren of Omaha, Neb.; and six grandchildren, Bryan and Hope Warren and their children, Seton, Howie and Layla, all of Sioux City, Kristi and Todd Berger and their children, Warren and Theresa, all of Omaha, Craig and Erica Upton and their children, Tyler and Ashlynn, all of Albuquerque, N.M., Steve Upton of Raytown, Mo., Elizabeth Warren and Katie Warren, both of Omaha.
