James E. Cord, 86, of Sioux City died Tuesday, Jan. 17, 2006, at a Sioux City hospital following a lengthy illness.

Memorial services will be 1 p.m. today at First United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Roger Madden officiating. Private graveside services will be in Logan Park Cemetery. Arrangements are under the direction of Meyer Brothers Colonial Chapel.

Mr. Cord was born Oct. 10, 1919, in Danbury, Iowa, the son of John "Cliff" and Ethel (Brown) Cord. He grew up in rural Danbury. He graduated from Danbury High School and from Iowa State College with a degree in agriculture economics. He enlisted in the U.S. Army the day after the Pearl Harbor attack and served in the South Pacific during World War II. He moved to Sioux City in 1945 after serving his country.

He married Ardis Woods on Nov. 25, 1947, in Sioux City. He owned and operated Michael's Seed Store and Michael's Garden Center in Sioux City for 25 years. He also owned and operated Michael's Christmas Trees for more than 50 years.

He was a 50-year member of First United Methodist Church and was very active having served as a finance trustee and on the pastor/parish committee. He was a member of the Quarry Masonic Lodge in Onawa, Iowa, the Scottish Rite Bodies, Abu Bekr Shrine and the High Twelve Club. He was a former member of the Abu Bekr Shrine Foot Patrol and the White Horse Mounted Patrol. He had served as treasurer for 10 years. He was a past president of SCORE and served in the Salvation Army board. He was a member of the downtown Kiwanis and was active on the agriculture committee of the Chamber of Commerce.

Survivors include his wife, Ardis of Sioux City; a son, Charles Cord of Des Moines; a daughter and her husband, Jean and Paul Hofmann of Battle Creek, Iowa; 10 grandchildren, Katy Kelton and Chet Hofmann, Christy Marshall, Marty, Amybeth, McKenzie, Tommy, Peter, Molly and Mick Hofmann; seven great-grandchildren; and a brother and his wife, John and Catherine Cord of Danbury, Iowa.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

Pallbearers will be Paul, Chet, Marty, Tommy, Peter and Michael Hofmann. Honorary pallbearers will be Mike Miller, Paul Braunger, Paul Dose, Kenny Wright, Norris Potts, Joe Savage, Charlie Zook Dick Cottington, Dr. Roger Spencer and John Graves.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given to First United Methodist Church or Hospice of Siouxland.
