Rose and her twin sister Leona were born March 22, 1939, to Carl and Margaret (Diekemper) Stieren of rural Aloys, West Point, Neb.

Rose received her education at St. Aloysius Grade School in rural Aloys. She attended School Sisters of St. Francis in Milwaukee, Wis. She received her teaching degree from Alverna College in Milwaukee.

She taught at rural Iowa schools, and continued her career at Lewis and Clark Elementary in South Sioux City. Rose retired in 2002 after 32 years at Lewis and Clark teaching fourth grade from the same classroom during this time. Rose was passionate about teaching and strived to give all her students the best possible education. By the end of her career, she had taught the children of former students. Rose made lifelong friends at Lewis and Clark.

Rose married LeRoy Messersmith Aug. 5, 1989, at their home.

Rose enjoyed browsing seed catalogs in preparation for her garden and flowers. She made sure red impatiens were prominent, giving a nod to her avid support of the Nebraska Cornhuskers. Rose and neighbor Mike had a friendly rivalry each football Saturday when Huskers or Hawkeyes played. The Nebraska flag was high and flying. She will be missed by all who knew her.

Survivors include her husband, LeRoy of Sioux City; brother, Art Stieren of West Point; sister, Agnes (Vincent) Rolf of West Point; and many loving extended family members.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Carl and Margaret Stieren; sisters, Dorothy Muhs, Marie Batenhorst, Clara Gentrup, Rita Luebbert and Leona Hagedorn; and brothers, Kenneth and Robert Stieren.

Memorials may be directed to the family or a charity of choice.
