ONAWA, Iowa -- Peter O. Nelson, 73, of Onawa died Tuesday, July 13, 2004, at a Sioux City hospital.

Services will be 1:30 p.m. Friday at Christy-Smith Morningside Chapel, with the Rev. Charles Layton of Onawa United Methodist Church officiating. Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery, with military rites conducted by the U.S. Army Reserves. Visitation will be noon until service time Friday at the funeral home.

Peter O. Nelson was born Feb. 28, 1931, in Eau Claire, Wis., the son of Vernon and Margaret (VanderBoon) Chamberlain. He was raised in the Eau Claire area, entering the military following his schooling. He spent more than 20 years in the U.S. Army, stationed at various posts around the world. He retired from the service in 1970.

He married Barbara J. Davis on Jan. 18, 1958, in Waukegan, Ill. The couple moved to Lawton, Iowa, in 1968, prior to his retirement from the service. He then worked for Wells Fargo Co. at the Port Neal Station, again retiring in 1996. In September 2003, the couple moved to Onawa.

Survivors include his wife, Barbara; two daughters and their husbands, Cathy and Tim Miller of Sioux Falls, S.D., and Ginger and Gary Addy of Onawa; five grandchildren, David Miller and his wife, Kammy, Chandra Miller, Cayla Miller, Tyler Addy and Lindsey Addy; two great-grandchildren, Brooklyne and Braden Miller; and a brother, Edward Nelson of San Fernando Valley, Calif.
