William E. "Ed" Lewis, 77, of Sioux City died Thursday, Feb. 8, 2007, at Indian Hills Nursing and Rehab Center.

Services will be 10 a.m. Saturday at Meyer Brothers Colonial Chapel, with the Rev. Gary Snyder of St. Michael's Catholic Church officiating. Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service Saturday at the funeral home. Condolences may be sent online to www.meyerbroschapels.com.

Ed was born May 21, 1929, in Sioux City, the son of Harry and Adah (Harris) Lewis. He grew up in Sioux City and attended Sioux City schools and Central High School. He served in the Iowa Army National Guard from 1948 to 1961. He was a combat engineer and retired as a master sergeant. He was a drill and marksmanship instructor.

He married LaVonne Simmons on July 31, 1948, in Sioux City. He worked for Lewis Bedding for 20 years, then was a sheet metal mechanic until he retired in 1991.

He was a member of the Sheet Metal Workers Union. He loved children and enjoyed his grandchildren more than anything. He enjoyed building projects. His daughter knows she had the best dad in the world.

Survivors include his wife, LaVonne of Sioux City; five children, Judy Taylor of Sioux City, Alan Lewis and his wife, Connie of Sioux City, Lynn Lewis and his wife, Gail of Sioux City, David Lewis of Dallas, Texas, and Renae and her husband, Marty Tompkins of Sergeant Bluff; 15 grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents; nine brothers and sisters; and a grandson, Daniel Lewis.
