Fred H. Campbell, 85, of Sioux City died Tuesday, Feb. 6, 2007, at a Sioux City of natural causes following a brief illness.

Memorial services will be 11 a.m. Friday at Christy-Smith Morningside Chapel, with the Rev. Al Hohl of First Congregational United Church of Christ officiating. Burial will be in Graceland Park Cemetery.

Fred was born Dec. 2, 1921, in Stevens, S.D., the son of William and Ethel (Erwin) Campbell. He was raised in Stevens and graduated from Central High School in 1940. He was a master technical sergeant in the U.S. Marine Corps during World War II, serving in the Philippine Islands and was a part of the Philippine Liberation.

He married Ruth B. Geiger on Sept. 10, 1943, in Las Vegas, Nev. After his military service, the couple lived in the Stevens area, moving to Morningside in 1955 and lived there until 1977, when they moved to Sergeant Bluff. About two and one half years ago, the couple moved to Northern Hills Independent Living, where they currently resided. He had worked for Hagan Printing Co. for a few years, then at the Sioux City Journal for 35 years as the composing room foreman.

He was a member of the International Typographical Union and a former member of the Moose Lodge. He was an avid golfer and enjoyed walking around town and at the mall. He also was a busy, busy "piddler."

Survivors include his wife, Ruth; a daughter, Ruth Holder of Sioux City; a son, Tom (Tedda) Campbell of Peoria, Ariz.; three grandchildren, Kelley (JR) Howe of Las Vegas, Nev., Molly Campbell and Tommy Campbell, both of Peoria, Ariz.; three stepgrandchildren, Jerry (Sherry) Holder of Sergeant Bluff, Julie (Tony Choquette) Brandt of Sergeant Bluff and Michael (Andrea) Holder of Sioux City; two great-grandchildren, Candace Jo and Joshua Tanner Howe; and eight great-stepgrandchildren, Tyson, Talitha, Karissa, Jena, Brendan, Justin, Ali and Taylor.

He was preceded in death by his parents; and a son-in-law.
